Protecting the Waterways

The Whanganui River has always been central to the success of Maraekowhai, in the early days of our farms the River was important as it provided access to the farm for the people who lived and worked here, allowing passage for supplies and it kept the soil rich to provide quality feed for the stock.

These days we respect and protect the river and waterways by planting on the boundaries of the river, over 19,000 poplar poles were planted to reduce run off into the river and prevent erosion. Tracts of native bush and scrub have been encouraged to replenish to add to this protection. Maraekowhai proudly participates in the ‘Healthy River Plan’ which monitors nitrogen levels in the River and requires farms to track fertiliser use, crops sown and movement of stock. All of this helps keep New Zealand clean and green.
